2020 Hand Pulled Serigraph 11 x 15” 28 x 38.5 cm 22 Stencils 60 Edition 6 APs
When I was originally fermenting ideas for this serigraph, in the spring of 2020 with Covid so alarming and new, I thought the piece would revolve around Social Distancing. Then there were some very tragic deaths, and the swell of awareness and support for the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement globally.
This made me reexamine about how random and without merit, these longstanding and harmful racial attitudes have been in keeping some peoples in our society from reaching their full potential. The bucolic scene is meant to be beautiful, and peaceful. The sheep are all exactly the same, with the only difference being that some have black wool, some have brown wool, and some have white wool. The only sheep that is not exactly the same as all the others is different, only, because it is standing at a different angle.
We all need to be kinder to each other, to treat everyone with respect, and level the playing field. As Dolly Parton charmingly put it, “Of course Black Lives Matter, you didn’t think our little white asses were the only ones that matter, did you?”
