This iceberg meme shows a polar bear hitching a ride, as the iceberg underneath it begins to melt. My polar bear artwork is celebrating these amazing swimmers, who enjoy taking a dip in water that is barely above freezing. No wonder they like to climb up on ice floes and take a break every once in a while. A thick undercoat of fur, and a thick layer of fat helps to both insulate and float the bear for its long cool swim. With Global Warming the sea ice landscape is becoming more fragmented, and polar bears who always regularly swam across bays, and between ice floes, are more frequently now being seen in open water. The longest ever recorded swim by a polar bear was 427 miles (687 km) in the Beaufort Sea, and it took nine days to complete. Phew, that is an extreme athlete!
