Chasing the Urban Metal Sheep

Chasing the Urban Metal Sheep

 2006         46.5 x 27.5"     118 x 70 cm           Acrylic on Canvas

We got ourselves a border collie from a breeder who specialized in herding dogs. These dogs were bred to chase sheep and to work. At about ten weeks old our dog imprinted on cars, they became his “sheep”. For about two days we thought it was really funny having this tiny puppy stumble around after every car that went by. Then a thought struck me, hum some day this is going to be a very strong athletic dog, and it may not be a lot of fun taking him for a walk. At this point we tried to discourage him, but it was too late.

Whenever I am doing anything around the outside of my house, I let the dog join me because he knows the borders of the property, and that he is not allowed to go beyond them. As soon as the door is opened, he runs full tilt to the curb, and immediately begins scanning back and forth for cars. When a car goes by, he races madly from one end of the property to the other. Then he sits down and immediately begins scanning for the next car, it’s his job.
