In ancient times people believed that the world was flat. Under the precarious conditions that sailors endured many ships were lost at sea. In order to explain this in a way that people could come to terms with, it was said that the ship had sailed over the edge of the world, and landed in a hostile environment where dragons dwelt waiting to devour the helpless crew. You can actually see written on some ancient maps the words, "Beyond This Place There Be Dragons."
