One of these Sheep is not like the Others

Hand Pulled Serigraph ~ 22 Stencils

2020 ~ 11 x 15” ~ 28 x 39 cm

Edition  60, artist proofs 6

Everyone in this group of sheep is exactly the same just different colors. Why would color make a difference?

This group of sheep are all the same except that their wool is different colors, white, brown and black. The bucolic scene of the sheep in a field is meant to be charming, and peaceful. The only member of the sheep flock that is not the same as all the others is different, only because it is standing at a different angle. It’s a perspective thing, if you shift your perspective, you can see that they are really all the same.

When I was originally fermenting the idea of this serigraph, in the spring of 2020 with Covid alarming and new. I originally thought the piece would revolve around Social Distancing. Then there were the heart-breaking deaths of George Floyd and Brianna Taylor, among others. Suddenly it became very important to create a black lives matter art piece representing the ridiculousness of judging individuals based on silly things like color.

We need to be kinder to each other, to treat everyone with respect, and to level the playing field so that everyone has the same chance at a good life. As one of my favorite people, the completely nonpolitical Dolly Parton charmingly put it when asked, “Of course Black Lives Matter, you didn’t think our little white asses were the only ones that matter, did you?”
