Wild and Domestic Horses Let Loose in a Pyramid

$3,500.00

Acrylic on Canvas ~ 2003
34 x 50″ 84 x 124 cm

The Egyptian mural has true to life Egyptian horses standing in front of it, as well as some carved wild horses cavorting across it.

This painting began around the Egyptian animal crossing, specifically the emotional connection between the cow and the calf as the calf is carried across the stream. I love Egyptian murals, however many are rather stiff and formulaic. I was drawn to the clear emotional connection between these animals, but that same connection is almost never seen in their human counterparts in Egyptian murals. The Egyptian fish paintings, which inspired the fish for the river scene at the bottom of my painting are all exactly in profile, probably according to a tablet of rules. I have borrowed all of the vignettes here from many, many, different Egyptian murals and brought them together in this painting.

The idea of bringing in the wild and domestic horses, and then letting them loose into this painting, was the catalyst which allowed me to incorporate a lot of my favorite Egyptian art, with one of my favorite animals, the horse.

Egyptian Hieroglyphs, which are phonetically based, have been transcribed to correspond with our alphabet, and this alphabet can easily be found online. The captions I have written contain humor, as well as pearls of wisdom.
