In ancient times many people believed that the world was flat, and an old world map would reflect that. Under the precarious conditions that sailors endured, many ships and their crews were lost at sea. There needed to be a way to explain this so that people who had lost their loved ones could come to terms with the tragic loss. It was said that the ship had sailed over the edge of the world, and landed in a hostile environment where medieval dragons dwelt waiting to devour the helpless crews. You can actually see written on some ancient maps the words, “ Beyond this Place there be Dragons”.
