Hanging with the Enemy

2016 25.5 x 37” 65 x 94 cm Acrylic on Canvas

This is a relationship that I have visited often, the complex enmity but at the same time respect between a large herbivore and its primary predators. Sometimes, if a pack of wolves knows that they have fatally wounded a moose, but the moose is not down, they will by some unspoken arrangement simply hang out together until the moose succumbs to its injuries. Some wolves may even curl up and have a snooze, while others keep watch from a distance.

Unlike a lot of my abstract/ reality paintings, this is not a collage, but done purely with acrylic paint. It is however, a little frustrating to do an abstract painting over realistic animals, because the moose and the wolves kept disappearing
